Mobile Developer

  • Toronto, ontario

emergiTEL is hiring a Mobile Developer for our client in the Digital identity industry. This is a Permanent role.
Compensation: $100,000 - $120,000/year
Location: Toronto, ON
Job Description (English)
Role Overview
  • The Mobile Developer owns the native iOS and Android SDKs that partners embed in their own applications, serving as the client-side entry point to identity and fraud-prevention services, including SIM-based authentication aligned with GSMA standards.
  • This is SDK engineering rather than app engineering. The deliverable is a small, stable, well-documented library that other developers integrate once and depend on for years.
  • The role covers the full product surface, including public API design, deep platform and mobile-networking work, packaging and release, reference applications, and integration documentation.
  • Because the SDKs run inside banking and fintech applications, correctness, backward compatibility, binary footprint, and privacy are treated as first-class requirements.
What You’ll Do
  • Own the design, development, testing, and release of the native iOS (Swift) and Android (Kotlin) SDKs end to end.
  • Design public SDK interfaces that are small, hard to misuse, and stable across releases, with deliberate versioning, deprecation, and backward-compatibility practices.
  • Handle the realities of mobile networks, including Wi-Fi and cellular transitions, dual-SIM and eSIM devices, captive portals, carrier variation, timeouts, and retry behaviour.
  • Keep the SDK lightweight and dependency-light by minimizing binary footprint, avoiding transitive dependency conflicts inside host applications, and collecting no more data than an integration requires.
  • Build and maintain reference applications and sample integrations for both platforms that demonstrate real, production-shaped integration paths.
  • Write and own developer-facing documentation, including integration guides, API references, migration notes, and troubleshooting runbooks.
  • Own SDK distribution and release engineering, including Swift Package Manager, CocoaPods, XCFramework, Maven Central/Gradle, signed artifacts, changelogs, and reproducible CI builds.
  • Define a test strategy appropriate to code that cannot be hot-fixed in production, including unit tests, instrumented and device-farm testing across OS versions and device models, and simulated carrier conditions.
  • Support partner integration teams by triaging integration issues, reproducing customer-reported failures from logs, and feeding that feedback into API and documentation improvements.
  • Instrument the SDK for diagnostics and error reporting that helps partners debug quickly without exposing end-user data.
  • Track iOS and Android platform releases and proactively address breaking changes in permissions, privacy manifests, and network stack behaviour.
  • Partner with Backend, QA, and Security teams on service contracts, test coverage, and security reviews surrounding the SDK.
  • Actively participate in agile ceremonies as part of a Scrum team, helping drive feature delivery and platform modernization.
What You Bring
Must-Have Skills & Experience
  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of professional mobile development experience.
  • Experience building and shipping SDKs or libraries consumed by third-party developers is a strong asset.
  • Current, hands-on production experience on both platforms: Swift for iOS and Kotlin for Android.
  • Proven public API design skills, including interface design, semantic versioning, deprecation strategy, thread-safety guarantees, and clear error-handling contracts.
  • Strong understanding of mobile networking, including HTTP/TLS, certificate handling, connection lifecycle, radio and Wi-Fi transitions, and behavior under unreliable network conditions.
  • Experience packaging and distributing libraries using Swift Package Manager, CocoaPods, XCFramework, Maven Central/AAR, including artifact signing and release processes.
  • Strong asynchronous and concurrency skills using Swift Concurrency/GCD and Kotlin Coroutines.
  • Solid automated testing discipline for library code, including mocking network layers and testing across OS versions and device configurations.
  • Proficiency with Git and CI/CD tools for mobile development such as Fastlane, GitHub Actions, Bitrise, or similar.
  • Security-conscious mindset with experience in secure storage (Keychain, Android Keystore), certificate pinning, code obfuscation, and careful handling of personal information.
  • Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to produce integration documentation that partner developers can follow without requiring support.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with a detail-oriented approach to compatibility and edge cases.
What Sets You Apart
  • Prior experience at a vendor shipping SDKs into regulated customer environments such as banks, fintechs, or insurers, including security review, penetration testing, and SBOM processes.
  • Familiarity with device attestation and anti-fraud signals, including App Attest, DeviceCheck, Play Integrity, and root/jailbreak or emulator detection.
  • Experience wrapping native SDKs for cross-platform frameworks such as React Native, Flutter, or Cordova.
  • Hands-on use of device farms such as Firebase Test Lab, BrowserStack, or AWS Device Farm, and testing against real carrier SIMs.
  • Backend familiarity with Python, Java, and REST API design sufficient to help shape the service contracts consumed by the SDK.
  • Experience with mobile observability and crash reporting at scale.
  • Contributions to open-source mobile libraries, public technical writing, or developer advocacy.
Ideal Candidate
  • Has shipped code that other developers depend on and demonstrates excellent SDK design principles with small, intuitive, and reliable interfaces.
  • Equally comfortable working in Swift and Kotlin.
  • Interested in understanding mobile networking behaviour at a deep level.
  • Treats unclear integration documentation as a product quality issue and continuously improves developer experience.
  • Balances platform expertise, technical rigor, reliability, security, and usability in every release.
