Senior Infrastructure Designer, Wintel

Our client is looking for a Wintel Senior Infrastructure Designer to join their team in Calgary - this role will be client facing and will support and mentor a team of designers. 

Skills Description
• Lead designs, specifications and work plans that meet or exceed established business and technical design requirements, approved architecture and technical standards, quality assurance, service levels, and continuous improvement goals.
• Look for ways to improve the infrastructure environment in regards to security, stability and sustainability.
• Provide mentorship to junior and operations staff helping to resolve issues as required.
• Bring a solid understanding of current best practices and industry standards
• Participate in root cause analysis of high priority (P1 & P2) operational failures; incorporate learnings into solution designs to prevent future failures.

Support the Technical Design Authority:
• Participate in Technical Assurance Review meetings – providing review feedback, recommendations, required actions, and approvals.
• Ensure solution designs are compliant with target architectures and standards and meet stated functional and non-functional requirements
• Build, review and maintain technical standards in conjunction with Operations and Enterprise Architecture.
• Evaluate technical deviations from current standards, present technical deviation recommendations to stakeholders, and provide final approval for all technical deviations.
• Research select and deploy the best applicable technology for systems development/maintenance and production Operations
• Identify impacts to existing infrastructure capacity
• Evaluate non-functional characteristics including performance, availability, scalability, resilience
• Review environments for production and non-production (development, test, QA, training) and provide recommendations for on-going improvement and sustainability
• Work with Operations to ensure delivered solutions are supportable, serviceable and meet business requirements & SLA’s.
• Identify software licensing impacts (where relevant)
• Ensure changes to existing services are made in a controlled manner: i.e. include impact assessment in consultation with the business and technical owners, regression testing of any impacted systems, and planned migration into production

As required:
• Install, configure and troubleshoot infrastructure, applications and software.
• Implement and document system administration procedures for Operations coverage and end users
• Determine configuration procedures for development team. 
• Maintain and update standards in configurations and optimize system designs.
• Design and architect new systems and support tools solutions.

Required qualifications to be successful in this role:

• 10+ years of progresive Enterprise IS/IT experience with a minimum 5 years of experience in Wintel solution design in Enterprise environments
• Undergraduate degree required in computer science, engineering, or related discipline with an information technology focus or equivalent work experience
• Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills in English
• Demonstrated ability to work both independently and with others
• High level of creativity and innovation in problem solving
• High level of analytical ability to deal with complex problems
• Responsible for solutions delivered by projects which can exceed 1 million dollars
• Strong competency in the efficient and effective use of solution design supporting applications such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Microsoft Visio
• Relevant manufacturer technical certification in Wintel servers (hardware / software) would be an asset

Breadth of Technology expertise and experience:
• Enterprise class Windows Server operating systems 2003-2012 R2 and supporting hardware (physical and virtual), software and tools. Windows Server 2016 experience beneficial
• Windows 10 planning / design / deployment
• Experience with eMessaging and collaboration solutions including Exchange and Lync, including mobility / mobile device management solutions.
• Citrix products and technologies including XenApp, XenDesktop, Xenmobile, and Sharefile
• A good understanding of Hypervisors (in particular VMware) and virtualization of Operating Systems, networks, and storage from a design perspective
• A good understanding of High Availability solutions such as clustering, load balancing, and replication
• IT Service Continuity services
• Equipment, Software, Component and Services Monitoring
• Performance and utilization data collection, and recurring performance tuning
• Authentication services
• Network Time Protocol (NTP) time-sync services
• File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP/FTPS) services
• Domain Name Services (DNS)
• Dynamic Configuration Host Protocol (DHCP)
• Out-of-band management (OOBM) access for Lights out Operation (LOM)
• Storage devices and sub-systems
• Storage connectivity such as Power-path, Multi-Path IO (MPIO), Dynamic Multipath (DMP), FCIP, iSCSI
• File systems and protocols, including NAS systems and file shares
• Power shell or VB Shell programming scripts (beneficial)
• TCP/IP networking
• General server security and hardening best practices, NERC/CIP experience is beneficial
• Infrastructure systems integration with remote access and application delivery
