Position Overview

The Senior Data Engineer provides development, operational support, and continuous improvement services for the Data Management Platform's enterprise integration environment. The role is responsible for designing, developing, monitoring, troubleshooting, maintaining, and enhancing Talend-based integrations that support critical business applications, data exchanges, analytics, and reporting solutions.

The Senior Data Engineer works closely with business stakeholders, data engineers, solution architects, platform administrators, and application teams to ensure reliable, secure, and scalable integration services. The position supports ongoing platform operations while contributing new integration development and modernization initiatives across the Government of Alberta Data Management Platform.

This is a hands-on technical role for someone who combines strong Talend and SQL development skills with a disciplined, service-oriented approach to platform operations including job scheduling, monitoring, error handling, and incident resolution; while collaborating with data engineers, platform administrators, ministry stakeholders, and vendor support partners.

Key Responsibilities

Talend Development & Integration

  • Demonstrate hands-on experience developing data integration solutions with Talend (Data Integration / Data Fabric / Talend Studio) .

  • Design, develop, test, and deploy Talend integration jobs, services, APIs, and reusable components.

  • Translate business and data requirements into technical designs, data mappings, transformation logic, and reconciliation processes.

  • Develop ETL/ELT solutions to integrate data across databases, files, APIs, cloud platforms, and enterprise applications.

  • Build reusable, parameterized, and environment-aware integrations for development, test, and production environments.

  • Implement scalable batch and near real-time integration solutions.

  • Participate in solution design, estimation, and release planning activities.

Platform Operations & Support

  • Deploy, schedule, orchestrate, and monitor Talend jobs, services, and platform components.

  • Investigate and resolve integration issues, production incidents, data load failures, and performance bottlenecks.

  • Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to prevent recurring issues.

  • Monitor platform health, job execution, throughput, and failures, and implement and maintain logging, monitoring, alerting, and automated recovery processes.

  • Support production releases, platform upgrades, patching, and environment maintenance.

  • Work with infrastructure teams, vendors, and business stakeholders to resolve platform and integration issues.

AI & Automation

  • Utilize AI and automation tools to streamline data engineering workflows, including pipeline development, testing, monitoring, and documentation.

  • Leverage AI-assisted tools for code generation, optimization, and review to improve development efficiency and code quality.

Required Skills & Experience

Education

  • University degree or college diploma in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Engineering, or a related discipline.

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Experience

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience developing data integration solutions with Talend (Data Integration / Data Fabric / Talend Studio) .

  • Strong SQL development skills.

  • Demonstrated experience designing, developing, testing, and deploying Talend integration jobs, services, APIs, and reusable components.

  • Proven experience translating business and data requirements into technical designs, data mappings, transformation logic, and reconciliation processes.

  • Experience developing ETL/ELT solutions across databases, files, APIs, cloud platforms, and enterprise applications.

  • Experience building reusable, parameterized, and environment-aware integrations.

  • Experience implementing scalable batch and near real-time integration solutions.

  • Experience deploying, scheduling, orchestrating, and monitoring Talend jobs and platform components.

  • Experience investigating and resolving integration issues, production incidents, data load failures, and performance bottlenecks.

Work Requirements

Location

  • This role is anticipated to be 100% remote; however, the resource must be available for on-site meetings as required.

  • On-site meetings may involve strategic, analytical, or technical discussions and may include engagement with team members, senior managers, directors, executive directors, or business clients.

  • On-Site Meeting Frequency: Meetings may occur up to 3–4 times (or more) per fiscal month, depending on the specific initiative and on-demand basis.

  • On-Site Location: Meetings will take place in Edmonton, Alberta, at one of the Government of Alberta buildings.

  • The resource will be provided with details regarding the meeting location in advance.

  • Time to travel and any associated expenses to and from Edmonton and/or travel within Alberta will be at no cost to the Province.

Work Authorization

  • Work must be done from within Canada due to network and data security issues.

Hours

  • Standard hours of work are 08:15 – 16:30 Alberta time, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays observed by the Province.

Equipment

  • The Contractor is responsible for supplying all equipment necessary for remote work, including computers, software, printers, supplies, and appropriate office furniture.

  • All contracted resources must utilize a computer with a modern version of Windows or macOS compatible with Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) and related remote-access software. Windows is strongly preferred due to system compatibility.

  • Required remote-access software will be installed on the resource's local machine.

  • While the Contractor supplies all physical hardware and work environment setups, the Province will ensure resources are granted the required credentials and access to Government of Alberta systems.

  • The fixed rate quoted must be inclusive of all overhead, office space and equipment, including supplies, administrative burden, mark-up, and all other costs to perform the Services for the duration of the Contract.

The ideal candidate is an experienced Senior Data Engineer with strong Talend and SQL development skills, a disciplined service-oriented approach to platform operations, and proven experience supporting enterprise integration environments. Experience with AI-assisted development tools for data engineering workflows is a strong asset. Public sector experience is an asset.
