Manager, Controls Engineer

emergiTEL is hiring a Manager, Controls Engineering for our client in the Sterilization and Healthcare Services industry. This is a Full-Time Permanent role.

Location: Ottawa, ON (On-Site)
Compensation: $110K-$120K per annum as base.


Role Summary

We are seeking an experienced and technically strong Manager, Controls Engineering to provide strategic leadership and hands-on oversight of electrical and control systems supporting production irradiator facilities. This is a working manager role — equal parts technical expert and people leader — accountable for ensuring all control systems operate safely, reliably, and in full compliance with regulatory and organizational standards.


Responsibilities

  • Provide people leadership to both internal and external engineering teams
  • Manage external vendors including contract management, resources, and budgets
  • Build and develop the Controls and Electrical Engineering team by establishing structure, talent strategy, performance expectations, and long-term capability growth
  • Drive service revenue to meet business objectives and develop new growth opportunities
  • Engage with customers to define the long-term Controls System Roadmap aligned with business and operational goals
  • Partner with Product Management and Engineering leadership to shape product business cases and guide the innovation roadmap
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget, and to the highest quality standards
  • Drive continuous improvement across system design, development, implementation, and lifecycle support
  • Support staffing, performance management, employee development, engagement, and succession planning

Qualifications

  • Engineering degree with P.Eng designation
  • Minimum 3 years of people management experience managing Controls Engineers and Technicians
  • Minimum 10 years of combined post-graduation experience in controls engineering
  • Minimum 8 years of leadership experience across people, project, and indirect supervision

Skills and Competencies

  • Hands-on experience with Allen Bradley / Rockwell Automation PLCs (working to intermediate level)
  • Experience with Aveva InTouch SCADA systems (working to intermediate level)
  • Knowledge of virtual machines, networking, and cybersecurity
  • Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills
  • Strong organizational, time management, and project management skills
  • Budget management experience
  • Coaching, mentoring, and team development skills
  • Problem-solving and decision-making abilities under pressure
  • Experience working in a regulated environment (preferred)

Additional Requirements

  • Occasional overtime may be required to meet project deadlines
  • International travel required — approximately 10 to 60 days per year
  • Valid Canadian passport required
