Job Type - 1-year contract with extension

As a Design Specialist (Contract) within the People Places & Spaces (PP&S) team, you will focus on the delivery of innovative design solutions that reflect our brand and culture. This role prioritizes the production of high-quality design deliverables that ensure all spaces are functional, sustainable, and aesthetically sound. Your passion for design, technical expertise, and collaborative approach will be instrumental in shaping the future of workplace environments. This role will serve as a dedicated resource supporting design solutions and technical execution for our branch refresh initiatives across the retail network.

PP&S is real estate and facilities business unit and leads real estate strategy, workplace optimization & experience, spatial design, construction, project management, leasing & subleasing management, facilities management & maintenance, asset management, facility operations, occupational health & safety, and physical security.

PP&S oversees 1.5 million square feet of space across Canada, and the team is deeply connected to transforming banking through client-facing locations and leading the way with our award-winning corporate spaces, both of which bring mandates to life and power possibility for Albertans.

Responsibilities

  • Design Documentation & Space Planning: Create all relevant construction and furniture documentation across all project stages, translating high-level concepts and user requirements into detailed spatial layouts.

  • Standards Application: Apply established brand standards and specifications to ensure cost-effective execution, visual consistency, and alignment with the functional and operational requirements of the space.

  • Quality Assurance & Compliance: Champion a culture of quality by conducting regular audits and site visits to ensure projects adhere to standards, building codes, and safety regulations. Uphold stakeholder relationships by ensuring design solutions address the unique business needs of a financial institution, including operational security, client confidentiality, and seamless service.

  • Project Logistics & Troubleshooting: Monitor individual project timelines and quality standards while navigating technical challenges to mitigate project-level risks.

Distinctive Skill Requirements

  • Conceptual Translation: Ability to transform business objectives and brands into physical environments that prioritize user flow, accessibility, and the overall occupant environment.

  • Human-Centric Design Application: Ability to integrate empathy-led design principles—such as universal accessibility, neurodiversity considerations, and wellness standards—into technical drawings. You will apply retail financial design principles to ensure spatial layouts prioritize user well-being, ergonomics, and intuitive navigation while balancing critical banking requirements, including line-of-sight security, acoustic privacy, and frictionless transaction flows, all while maintaining the brand's aesthetic vision.

  • Creative Documentation: Producing comprehensive packages that communicate the design intent from the initial sketch through to final construction.

  • Decision-Making & Problem-Solving: Confidently evaluating options and making sound technical decisions to drive project success.

  • Communication: Ability to build rapport with stakeholders and convey complex design information clearly and concisely.

  • Adaptability: Capacity to embrace evolving priorities and adapt design strategies to meet new organizational challenges.

  • Drawing Production: Utilize AutoCAD and Revit to produce precise design plans, detailed drawings and technical specifications.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in architecture, interior design, or a related field. 3-5 years of experience in workplace design.

  • Technical Expertise: Deep understanding of design principles, practices, and techniques. Familiarity with building codes, safety regulations, and industry best practices.

  • Design Proficiency: Significant progressive experience in design execution and production.

  • Software Proficiency: Proficiency in design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit).
