Pay Rate: $678/day (Per Diem)


About the Role

The Senior Database Administrator will support a major modernization initiative focused on migrating enterprise data platforms to Microsoft Azure, including Azure SQL and Synapse environments.

This role will play a critical part in maintaining, optimizing, and evolving database systems across hybrid (on-prem and cloud) environments while supporting the organization’s broader data strategy and analytics capabilities.


Key Responsibilities

Database Administration & Operations

  • Install, configure, manage, and maintain SQL Server environments (2012/14/16/19) across Windows and Linux
  • Manage Azure SQL, Managed Instances, Synapse Analytics, and Data Lake environments
  • Execute database expansions, reorganizations, purging, and capacity planning
  • Monitor database performance, availability, and health; troubleshoot issues proactively

Cloud & Modernization

  • Support migration and operation of databases within Azure (IaaS & PaaS)
  • Manage Azure SQL Dedicated Pools, Serverless, and Synapse Analytics
  • Provide expertise in hybrid environments combining on-prem and cloud systems
  • Contribute to long-term data architecture and modernization strategies

Performance, Security & Optimization

  • Perform performance tuning, query optimization, and troubleshooting
  • Manage high availability solutions (Always-On, clustering, log shipping, mirroring)
  • Implement and maintain database security, including encryption and authentication
  • Address cybersecurity vulnerabilities and ensure compliance with best practices

Data Strategy & Governance

  • Support enterprise data warehouse and analytics platforms
  • Ensure data quality, integrity, and governance across systems
  • Participate in enterprise data strategy planning and execution

Support & Leadership

  • Provide technical guidance to Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 teams
  • Lead disaster recovery planning, testing, and execution
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and provide recommendations for improvements

What You’ll Need

  • 7–9+ years of experience with SQL Server (Azure and on-premises)
  • 5+ years of experience with Azure Synapse Analytics
  • 5+ years managing Azure SQL, Data Lake, and serverless environments
  • Strong expertise in SQL Server performance tuning and optimization
  • Experience with Azure Managed Instance and Azure SQL Database
  • Hands-on experience with backup, recovery, and high availability solutions
  • Strong understanding of database security (authentication, encryption, TDE)
  • Experience with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)
  • Proven ability to support complex enterprise database environments

Certifications (Required)

  • Microsoft Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900)
  • Microsoft Azure Data Fundamentals (DP-900)
  • Administering Microsoft Azure SQL Solutions (DP-300)

Nice to Have

  • Experience with distributed data systems and middleware
  • Knowledge of data warehouse design and data marts
  • Experience with Oracle OBIEE or ERP systems
  • Familiarity with Ontario Government enterprise architecture frameworks
  • Experience with CASE tools and emerging IT trends

Deliverables

  • Support installation, configuration, and maintenance of SQL Server environments
  • Manage database performance, backups, recovery, and disaster recovery processes
  • Lead database migrations and modernization initiatives
  • Provide support for analytics and reporting platforms
  • Ensure proper documentation, monitoring, and governance of database systems
  • Deliver knowledge transfer, documentation, and walkthroughs to internal teams

Assignment Details

  • Duration: 125 Business Days (with option to extend an additional 125 days)
  • Work Model: Onsite as required by hiring manager
  • Location Requirement: Work must be performed within Ontario

Knowledge Transfer

  • Provide full documentation and knowledge transfer throughout the engagement
  • Share deliverables, milestones, and system walkthroughs with internal teams
  • Ensure proper handover before end of assignment

Compensation

The daily rate for this position is $678/day, based on experience, qualifications, and overall fit for the role.
